We invite the ETIS community to join us for a discussion with Laura Jugel, representative from the European Commission, as we explore the key obligations of the AI Act and how its scope affects the European telecom sector.

After lengthy negotiations within the European Institutions, the AI Act has officially been adopted earlier in 2024. The scope of this first-of-its-kind regulation is far-reaching, as it is a horizontal regulation applying to all sectors. Thus, an important question arises: how will this new legislation impact the European telecom sector?

Within the telecoms sector, operators are increasingly leveraging AI solutions to optimise network operations, enhance cybersecurity, automate processes, help reach sustainability goals, and introduce new services. The AI Act follows a risk-based approach, introducing rules on use cases which can pose high risk to health, safety, and fundamental rights. Due to the horizontal nature of the regulation, some AI applications used in the telecoms sector could be affected by the new rules when they are critical for safety.

To help us navigate this complex landscape, we invited Laura Jugel, Legal and Policy Officer at the European Commission to hold an online presentation. She will shed light on which AI systems used by telecom companies can be affected by the AI Act, what obligations companies will companies face, the timelines they have to adhere to, and what role the newly-established European AI Office's role will have in enforcing the regulation.

This webinar will be open to members of the whole ETIS community to listen in. After a 30-minutes long presentation, attendees will have the chance to ask questions from the Commission in the course of a Q&A session.
